Last week we inaugurated a new cross-campus conference at Simmons College on Gender, Justice and Social Entrepreneurship. Where issues of gender and women meet social justice concerns and social entrepreneurship action is a sweet spot for this college established to facilitate women securing independent livelihoods. The 2012 conference theme was Food Justice. We were lucky to have good friends join us from Root Capital — a terrific organization and model for the social enterprise — to talk about their work in South and Central America. rootcapital.org. I was also very happy to meet Stacy Cordeiro a cooperatives organizer in Boston. Yes, cooperatives are still with us as an alternative organizational form to for-profits and non-profits. I’ve seen their presence in France and Spain, too. Stacy reports the cooperative movement needs its own MBA…an intriguing idea.
